The best way to learn about historic houses is to look at them closely, and the most fun way to look at them closely is to do a puzzle showing a wonderful historic house! So, we made a unique and interesting collection of Historic House Puzzles for you to enjoy!

Wall-to-wall carpet is nothing new. The homes of many wealthy Americans had wall-to-wall carpet in the best rooms by the late 18th century. Improved production technology developed in England (and stolen by American industrial spies) reduced the cost considerably and middle-class homes like this one often had the parlor carpeted by the mid-19th century.
This reproduction carpet is in the parlor of the McLean House at the Appomattox Court House National Park in Virginia. The house is accurately interpreted to 1865, when General Robert E. Lee surrendered the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia to General Ulysses S. Grant of the U.S. Army of the Potomac in this room on April 19th – effectively ending the Civil War that had cost more than 600,000 American lives. Hopefully floor covering options are not the only lessons we can take from our history.
Chapter 14 of “Restoring Your Historic House, The Comprehensive Guide for Homeowners” explains what clues to look for to tell if your historic room may have originally been carpeted – and where to find accurate reproduction carpeting today!
Signed and personalized copies of the award-winning and bestselling 720-page hardcover book are available directly from the author in our online shop.
The classic volume on identifying historic house styles, “A Field Guide to American Houses” by Virginia McAlester, is available in our shop along with select restoration and preservation titles by other authors.
