This Week’s Puzzle ~ Pretty As a New Penny

The best way to learn about historic houses is to look at them closely, and the most fun way to look at them closely is to do a puzzle showing a wonderful historic house! So, we made a unique and interesting collection of Historic House Puzzles for you to enjoy!

Pretty As a New Penny

Note the sun glinting off the new copper flashing in the pedimented gable on this freshly restored classic Italianate villa. Copper will oxidize to a dull brown color within months of installation, but for a brief moment, it shines like a new penny.
The Italianate style became popular in the mid-19th century. Architectural plan books spread the style from coast to coast in America. Drawing from rural villas of Italy, classical detailing and deep bracketed eaves are characteristic of the style. The style can be found in cubical villas, as in this Bath, Maine example, and in asymmetrical forms, frequently with a campanile-like tower. Italianate detailing can also be found on simple gable roofed houses.

Understanding the style of a house is the essential first step in developing a restoration plan that prioritizes the preservation and restoration of character-defining features while making changes necessary for modern life in an old house.
More than two dozen full color photos are used to illustrate the style in Chapter 2 of “Restoring Your Historic House, The Comprehensive Guide for Homeowners.”

Signed and personalized copies of the award-winning and bestselling 720-page hardcover book are available directly from the author in our shop at YourHistoricHouse.com/shop/.
The classic volume on identifying historic house styles, “A Field Guide to American Houses” by Virginia McAlester, is available in our shop along with select restoration and preservation titles by other authors. “Restoring Your Historic House” is also available in bookstores nationwide and from online retailers.
