The best way to learn about historic houses is to look at them closely, and the most fun way to look at them closely is to do a puzzle showing a wonderful historic house! So, we made a unique and interesting collection of Historic House Puzzles for you to enjoy!

What I love most about this Greek Revival style house in Downeast Maine is how remarkably intact it is from the 19th century. It is nearly unchanged from a century or more ago. It retains elements that are generally gone on historic houses, like the wood storm windows and wood-framed half screens on the windows. The front door has its historic screen door as well. The sliding carriage house doors remain, the wood gutters are there and still in use, as is the rose trellis on the kitchen ell.
The house was built c. 1850. The bay window and front door hood added about a decade later. The carriage house doors may have been replaced around 1900. The only visible change to the exterior since then was replacing the wood shingle roof with asphalt shingle.
Houses like this in excellent condition are as precious as they are rare. They don’t need to be restored, only maintained. I hope this one remains in the hands of people who appreciate it for what it is and continue to maintain it for the next century and beyond.
I wrote “Restoring Your Historic House, The Comprehensive Guide for Homeowners” because so many historic houses do need to be restored, and sympathetically updated for 21st century life.
