Downeast Maine Georgian Colonial

This beautiful example of late-18th century Georgian Colonial architecture is in Dennysville, Maine. The rear ell was built in 1787, and the main block of the house added in 1790. It was built by Hingham, Massachusetts, master builders Josiah and James Chubbock for Theodore Lincoln. Lincoln’s father, General Benjamin Lincoln, was one of three Boston-area proprietors who acquired Townships I and II, totaling 10,000 acres in remote eastern Maine. This area is now occupied by the towns of Dennysville, Pembroke, and Perry.
The younger Lincoln was sent by his father with a group from Massachusetts to settle the area in 1786. The primary attraction was the vast timber resources of the region and Theodore Lincoln did very well in the timber trade, as his large Georgian house shows. The house remained in the Lincoln family until 1951.

More than 20 examples are included to illustrate the Georgian Colonial style in Chapter 2 of “Restoring Your Historic House, The Comprehensive Guide for Homeowners.” Signed and personalized copies of the award-winning and bestselling 720-page hardcover book are available from the author in our online shop at YourHistoricHouse.com/shop/
