Boston architect Henry Hobson Richardson developed his Victorian era take on the 11th and 12th century Romanesque architecture of southern France, Spain and Italy in the 1870s. He worked in the style until his early death in 1886 and others continued using it into the early 20th century.
This example in Connellsville, PA, is a good example of the style. Romanesque Revival houses tend to be large and built of brick or stone, often with carved stone or cast terra cotta ornament. Broad arches are a characteristic feature of the style. This house has a half-round arch at the entry with two additional arches on the porch to the left (unfortunately hidden by shrubbery). Cast terra cotta ornament appears at the eaves of the porch, house, and tower.
