Mobile, Alabama, Queen Anne

A Mobile, Alabama, Queen Anne with remarkable porches!

The Old Dauphin Way Historic District in Mobile is nearly 800 acres and includes more than 1,800 buildings, the majority houses. Although tucked behind a massive Live Oak tree, this one stands out as a district highlight.

The tree makes photographing the house challenging, particularly with dappled sunlight coming through the branches.

American Queen Anne emerged from the English Queen Anne style and developed its own distinctive characteristics. Typical features of the style seen here are the complex roof form, use of patterned shingle and clapboard for different areas of the house, varied window sizes, exuberant “gingerbread” trim, and wrap-around porches.

Understanding the style of a house is the essential first step in developing a restoration plan that prioritizes the preservation and restoration of character-defining features while making changes necessary for modern life in an old house.

More than two dozen full-color photos illustrate the Queen Anne style in Chapter 2 of “Restoring Your Historic House, The Comprehensive Guide for Homeowners.”
