New Orleans Shotgun House

A charming Greek Revival with a hint of Italianate style New Orleans shotgun house.

This sweet house is in New Orleans’ Faubourg Marigny neighborhood. The shotgun house form, a long single-room wide house, and its double shotgun variant are the city’s most common house type. The form came to Louisiana from Hati at the start of the 19th century.

Today, New Orleans has the greatest concentration of shotgun houses in the world, and they are a key part of the city’s unique historic character.

19th century developers and builders in urban areas of the American South had a knack for giving small houses a big presence though the bold use of architectural features on their facades. This house is a good example of that.

The regional variations in house types and styles help to tell the story of how our nation developed. Different immigrant groups brought distinctive ideas and traditions that were added to those already here. Various regions’ traditional cultures and characters are recorded and remembered in their historic buildings.

Identifying the character-defining features of a house is the foundation of planning a good rehabilitation. The topic is covered in detail in “Restoring Your Historic House, The Comprehensive Guide for Homeowners.”
