This Week’s Puzzle ~ The Wedding Cake House

The best way to learn about historic houses is to look at them closely, and the most fun way to look at them closely is to do a puzzle showing a wonderful historic house! So, we made a unique and interesting collection of Historic House Puzzles for you to enjoy!

The Wedding Cake House

What do you get when you wrap a brick Federal style house in wood Gothic Revival trim? The famed Wedding Cake House in Kennebunk, Maine! It was built in 1825 and received its Gothic trim in 1852.

The house had been in somewhat neglected condition in recent years, as often happens when long-term owners become elderly and less able to keep up with maintenance. Fortunately, the next generation has undertaken a full restoration.

Few historic buildings stand today exactly as they were built, and many have had substantial changes in the past. The Wedding Cake House is a great example of that. It is looking cheerful again after the recent restoration work.

Federal and Greek Revival are two of 25 styles and types described and illustrated in Chapter 2 of “Restoring Your Historic House, The Comprehensive Guide for Homeowners.” Hundreds of color photos are keyed with character-defining features of each style.

Signed and personalized copies of the award-winning and bestselling 720-page hardcover book are available from the author in our online shop at YourHistoricHouse.com/shop/.

Select preservation titles by other authors including the classic “A Field Guide to American Houses” (revised edition) by Virginia McAlester are also available in our shop!
