This Week’s Puzzle ~ 1799 French Wallpaper

The best way to learn about historic houses is to look at them closely, and the most fun way to look at them closely is to do a puzzle showing a wonderful historic house! So, we made a unique and interesting collection of Historic House Puzzles for you to enjoy!

1799 French Wallpaper

This modern-looking wallpaper design was created in 1799 by the French firm Manufacture Bon and was reproduced by Adelphi Paper Hangings for the exhibit “The Art of French Wallpaper Design” at the RISD Museum in Providence, Rhode Island.

The original example is also in the exhibit, which runs through May 11th. The exhibit draws from the museum’s Huard Collection of nearly 500 wallpapers printed in France between 1770 and 1840 and collected there in the 1920s and 1930s. RISD has published a comprehensive digital publication about the exhibit, edited by exhibit Curator Emily Banas, which can be found at: risdmuseum.org/art-french-wallpaper-design

Adelphi is the last company producing hand block printed wallpaper in the U.S. They provided the photos illustrating the process in “Restoring Your Historic House, The Comprehensive Guide for Homeowners.”

Signed and personalized copies of the award-winning and bestselling 720-page hardcover book are available from the author in our shop at YourHistoricHouse.com/shop/.
