The best way to learn about historic houses is to look at them closely, and the most fun way to look at them closely is to do a puzzle showing a wonderful historic house! So, we made a unique and interesting collection of Historic House Puzzles for you to enjoy!

Colonial Revival style Hill-Stead in Farmington, Connecticut, was designed by Theodate Pope Riddle (1867-1946) with the noted New York firm of McKim, Mead, and White as consulting architects. It was completed in 1901. Pope Riddle was one of the first licensed female architects in the United States. The country estate was built as a retirement home for Theodate’s parents, Alfred and Ada Pope.
It was designed in part to house their collection of French Impressionist paintings and other art works. Theodate inherited the house and lived there until her own death in 1946. Since that time, it has been preserved with its contents as the Hill-Stead Museum. It offers a rare opportunity to see great art displayed in a furnished home as it was seen historically. hillstead.org
The house is a wonderful example of Colonial Revival architecture, with its main block and porch echoing George Washington’s Mount Vernon. Understanding the style of a house will help you identify which features are character-defining so you can prioritize their preservation.
