This Week’s Puzzle ~ The Timothy Childs House

The best way to learn about historic houses is to look at them closely, and the most fun way to look at them closely is to do a puzzle showing a wonderful historic house! So, we made a unique and interesting collection of Historic House Puzzles for you to enjoy!

The Timothy Childs House

The Timothy Childs House was built in Deerfield, Massachusetts in 1730 as a restrained expression of the Georgian style. The pediments over the first story windows are the primary indicator of that style remaining visible on the exterior. Later owners added the Federal style entry vestibule around 1886. It was reportedly salvaged from a c. 1800 house in New York City.

The Colonial Revival porch to the right was likely added around the same time. Deerfield is filled with beautifully restored historic homes, most built before 1850. Historic Deerfield owns many of them and has them open to the public seasonally. Historic-Deerfield.org

Many historic houses have been added to or otherwise changed over time. Understanding these changes should be the first step in planning a rehab/restoration project. Later additions can be as historically significant as the original house. Chapters 2 and 3 of “Restoring Your Historic House, The Comprehensive Guide for Homeowners” cover this subject in depth.

Signed and personalized copies of the award-winning and bestselling 720-page hardcover book are available from the author in our online shop at YourHistoricHouse.com/shop/.

Our shop also carries select preservation and restoration titles by other authors. Save on cost and shipping with our multi-book combo packs!

“Restoring Your Historic House” is also available in bookstores nationwide and from online retailers.
