Tucked in the Trees ~ Charming and Eclectic 1902 House

Tucked in the Trees ~ This eclectic and charming 1902 Hartford, Connecticut, house exhibits elements of several popular turn-of-the-century styles.

It is sheathed in wood shingles like a Craftsman style house. The half-timber with stucco gables and textured front chimney stack are Tudor Revival- inspired. The polygonal corner porch and porte cochere have brackets suggesting a Stick Style influence.

Such eclectic combinations were not uncommon in the later Victorian era and into the 20th century. Sometimes they are successful, as here, and sometimes not so much. The house is located in the West End South Historic District, largely developed between 1850 and 1920. The district has a wonderful variety of house styles from this period.

Understanding the style(s) of a house is the essential first step in developing a restoration plan that prioritizes the preservation and restoration of character-defining features while making changes necessary for modern life in an old house.

Twenty-five architectural styles and types described and illustrated in Chapter 2 of “Restoring Your Historic House, The Comprehensive Guide for Homeowners.”
