While Eureka, California, is known as the location of one of America’s most fabulous and best-known Victorian era houses, the Carson House, it is also home to many other wonderful historic houses. This c. 1890 Queen Anne house with a round corner tower and double-lobed porch is a great example.
As the primary port for the Redwood forest region of northern California, Eureka boomed in the second half of the 19th century, supplying much of the lumber that built (and rebuilt) San Francisco and other West Coast cities. The city’s prosperity during this period is captured in the beautiful architecture that remains.
The Italianate, Second Empire and Queen Anne houses of northern California have a particular exuberance, often exceeding the excesses seen on houses in the same styles elsewhere. This celebration of the aesthetic possibilities of wood continued through the Craftsman period in the work of California architects like Greene & Greene.
Understanding the style of a house is the essential first step in developing a restoration plan that prioritizes the preservation and restoration of character-defining features while making changes necessary for modern life in an old house.
Queen Anne is one of the 25 styles and types illustrated in Chapter 2 of “Restoring Your Historic House, The Comprehensive Guide for Homeowners.”
