This Week’s Puzzle ~ Merchant’s House Museum Parlor

The best way to learn about historic houses is to look at them closely, and the most fun way to look at them closely is to do a puzzle showing a wonderful historic house! So, we made a unique and interesting collection of Historic House Puzzles for you to enjoy!

Merchant’s House Museum Parlor

Last week, I toured the Merchant’s House Museum (also known as the Seabury Tredway House) in New York City. It is a remarkable 1830s house that survives with its original furnishings and decorations. The only one in Manhattan. The brick and marble exterior is a fine example of the late Federal style. The interior reflects the Greek Revival style that was emerging at the time the house was built.

A museum since 1936, the National Historic Landmark house has been carefully restored over the decades. Currently, the facade is wrapped in scaffolding for masonry repointing and repairs to the brick wall and marble stoop (stairs). The front parlor seen here accurately presents how the family of a successful merchant lived in New York in the mid-19th century. The museum is well worth a visit! merchantshouse.org
