This Week’s Puzzle ~ The Lowenberg-Roberts Mansion

The best way to learn about historic houses is to look at them closely, and the most fun way to look at them closely is to do a puzzle showing a wonderful historic house! So, we made a unique and interesting collection of Historic House Puzzles for you to enjoy!

The Lowenberg-Roberts Mansion

Constructed in 1889, the Queen Anne style house was designed by architect W.R. Carpenter for pioneer merchant Bernard Lowenberg. It is located in the Browne’s Addition neighborhood of Spokane, Washington and is now operated as an event venue called the Roberts Mansion; ejrobertsmansion.com

The Queen Anne style often featured complex roof forms with multiple gables and dormers projecting from a main hipped roof, as on this example. Other common features of the style can include porches, elaborate trim, bay windows, and combined masonry and wood siding materials. Understanding the style of a house is the essential first step in developing a restoration plan that prioritizes the preservation and restoration of character-defining features while making changes necessary for modern life in an old house.

25 historic architectural styles are described and illustrated with multiple examples in Chapter 2 of “Restoring Your Historic House, The Comprehensive Guide for Homeowners. Signed and personalized copies of the award-winning and bestselling 720-page hardcover book are available directly from the author in our online bookshop at YourHistoricHouse.com/shop/.

The classic volume on identifying historic house styles, “A Field Guide to American Houses” by Virginia McAlester, is also available in our shop, along with other authors’ select restoration and preservation titles. “Restoring Your Historic House is also available in bookstores nationwide and from online retailers.
