Victorian Corner Blocks

This two-page spread is from the E.L. Roberts Millwork Company catalog from1900. The 300+ page catalog contained every imaginable millwork element for a home.

The company offered 24 corner block designs. The following pages show 48 head block designs and 24 base block designs. 88 casing profiles are offered to run between the selected blocks. This plethora of options resulted from the development of steam-powered mills and transportation systems after the Civil War. Prior to that, the options for trim were limited to the molding plane profiles in an individual builder’s tool box which were used to make the needed moldings on-site.

The post-war range of options allowed for endless combinations, making nearly every house unique in its detailing. The millwork selected for a particular house are character-defining features of that house. Every effort should be made to preserve or restore such elements to maintain the special character of the house.

Restoring Your Historic House, The Comprehensive Guide for Homeowners will help you understand what is special about your house, and how to preserve those character-defining elements. The 720-page best-selling hardcover book is available in bookstores and from online retailers.

Signed copies are available directly from the author at YourHistoricHouse.com.

Some local bookstores are open for phone orders and pickup, they can order copies from W.W. Norton.
