Sunset at Boscobel Cottage Puzzle

The best way to learn about historic houses is to look at them closely, and the most fun way to look at them closely is to do a puzzle showing a wonderful historic house! So, we made a unique and interesting collection of Historic House Puzzles for you to enjoy!

Sunset at Boscobel Cottage

Queen Anne style Boscobel Cottage was built in Bar Harbor, Maine, in 1887 by architect James Foster as a rental cottage for wealthy summer visitors. It later became an inn known as the Manor House, now called the Sand Bar Inn. At the time this cottage was built, Bar Harbor was becoming a rival to established summer resorts for the wealthy like Newport, Rhode Island. It was built at a greater scale than earlier cottages, which later accommodated its conversion to use as an inn.
This house is a relatively restrained example of the Queen Anne style. Character-defining features include the complex roof form, wrap-around porch, bay windows, and decorative multi-paned upper sash in the windows. Understanding the style of a house should be the starting point for planning a renovation/restoration project.

Queen Anne is one of 25 styles and types illustrated in Chapter 2 of “Restoring Your Historic House, The Comprehensive Guide for Homeowners.” Signed and personalized copies of the award-winning and bestselling 720-page hardcover book are available from the author in our online shop at YourHistoricHouse.com/shop/.
Our shop also carries select preservation and restoration titles by other authors. Save with our multi-book combo packs! “Restoring Your Historic House is also available in bookstores nationwide and from online retailers.
