A Sacramento Cotswold Cottage Revival

This house in the Cotswold Cottage variant of the Tudor Revival style. Architects in the early 20th century looked toward the romantic old buildings of Europe for inspiration. Those inspired by houses in the British Isles are collectively called Tudor Revival, but there are variations within the style.

The stone and stucco cottages of the Cotswold region of England are famous for their charm, much of it derived from thickly thatched roofs that wrap around dormers and gables.
Chimneys topped with chimney pots also tend toward more organic forms, tapering and sometimes rounded at the edges. Door hoods and groupings of casement windows are also characteristic features.

This example, in sunny Sacramento, California, is a long way from Southwest England, but is right at home in a neighborhood of Tudor Revival and other early 20th century houses.

Understanding the style of a house is the first step in developing a restoration plan that prioritizes the preservation and restoration of character-defining features while making changes necessary for modern life in an old house.

Tudor Revival is one of 25 styles and types described and illustrated in Chapter 2 of “Restoring Your Historic House, The Comprehensive Guide for Homeowners.”
